glossary definition:
acne:
acne, problem skin, breakout, bad skin

The exact cause of an acne breakout is still not clearly understood, but it affects almost 90% of teenagers and 25% of all adults. The condition is aggravated by overactivity of oil-producing glands in the skin. The face has the highest number of these glands, although acne can also occur on the back, shoulders, neck, and arms.

There are several types of spots that may occur. Most common are blackheads (caused by blockage of the pores) and whiteheads (when a follicle contains trapped sebum - an oily secretion).

The sebaceous glands can also become infected causing cysts to develop beneath the skin's surface. These acne cysts can rupture, spreading the infection into nearby skin tissue. This can result in scarring.

One primary cause of acne appears to be the production of sexual hormones during puberty, although many other causes of acne are still unknown.

Chocolate and fatty foods DO NOT contribute to acne. Recent advances have produced beauty products that may be effective in reducing outbreaks.
