antioxidant
An antioxidant reduces the damaging effects of oxidation (including aging) by reacting with and neutralizing harmful molecules in the body.
As a normal part of their function, Cells create toxic molecules called free radicals. A free radical is a damaged molecule – it's missing an electron. Stress, aging, pollution and cigarette smoke can create even more free radicals. In abundance this can lead to damage of healthy DNA and aging, not to mention cancer, heart disease, and stroke.
There are many antioxidant vitamins including Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and beta-carotene. Antioxidants can also be found in fresh fruits and vegetables. |
