Hair Restoration (Hair Transplant) for Patients in the Bay Area, including San Francisco, San Jose and Palo Alto

Hair restoration (or hair transplant) has gone through a tremendous evolution over the past 25 years. In the past, a typical treatment involved using large plugs of hair to treat hair loss, creating an unnatural appearance (similar to a dolls head). While the density of hair was improved, the result was suboptimal. This field has made huge strides. Using the most up-to-date techniques, hair restoration surgery can restore an incredibly natural hair pattern. Our goal is to educate each candidate about medical and surgical hair loss treatment and to demonstrate how effective hair restoration can be.

Hair loss in men and women can be due to many factors. Male pattern baldness is extremely common, affecting upward of 60% of all men by the age of 60. Typical patterns of loss include receding temples, thinning and narrowing of the frontal hairline, and loss at the crown (bald spot). In women the immediate hairline is often preserved and the loss happens in a more diffused pattern. While it is difficult to always pinpoint the exact cause of balding, common causes include hormone fluctuations, genetics, or family history.

A quick internet search for hair loss treatment will show dozens, if not hundreds, of aggressively marketed products. We will take time to educate you about appropriate and effective treatments. Each person is different and a treatment regimen should be tailored to fit each individual's situation.

How is hair restoration (hair transplant) surgery performed?

Surgical transplantation of hair or hair transplant is a safe and extremely effective hair loss treatment. The idea behind transplantation is simple - hair with their follicles are borrowed from the back of the head and transferred to other areas that are affected by balding. The hair in the back of the head is programmed not to fall out. Therefore as hair loss proceeds in other areas, the density in the back is maintained and there is plenty to 'share' without changing the appearance of the back of the head. The great part is that the transplanted hair maintains its integrity (keeps the tendency not to fall out), creating a permanent improvement in a person's appearance.

We use two techniques for hair transplant. The first technique is follicular unit transplantation (FUT) grafting. In FUT the entire graft is harvested from the back of the scalp. This leaves a discrete linear incision. Over the course of a day, a microscopic dissection is performed to create individual follicular unit grafts. These grafts are placed in the desired area (hairline, temples, crown) one by one. Designing the pattern of transplantation and the orientation of each graft is the key to a natural result.

The second technique is follicular unit extraction (FUE). Individual follicular units are harvested directly from the scalp. This is done using a needle less than 1 mm in diameter. This creates small micro incisions which should look imperceptible when healed.

We realize that scarring is a concern for most patients. We meticulously handle your skin and hair to ensure your procedure is optimized for the best results possible. Remember, we are not creating new hair. Transplanted hair is borrowed from the back of the head to treat other areas of the scalp. No one can promise you the exact same density you had at 16 years old. However, you don't need the same number of hairs you had as a teenager to have a natural and full bodied hairline. In fact, a skilled hair transplant surgeon needs to know how to use the hair available from the back of the head in order to create a full, natural and youthful appearance. Most importantly, your surgeon must understand that after transplantation, some of the original hair (not from the transplantation) will continue to fall out. It is crucial that a transplantation design take this into account so that every patient will look natural regardless of whether they elect to have a second procedure in the future.

In performing a hair transplant, the attention to detail makes all the difference. We pride ourselves on offering solutions that enhance your appearance utilizing aesthetic insight and technical expertise to deliver outstanding natural results.

Post-Operative Recovery Process

What should I expect after my hair transplant?

Patients go home after the procedure. We ask that someone stay with you for the first 24 hours as light sedation is often used. There is typically minimal pain.

Three months after the hair transplant procedure the follicles begin to produce hairs. The hair growth occurs in cycles over the first year. The complete result is apparent one year after surgery. The benefit of this process is that not only does the hair growth occur in a natural pattern, but it is gradual enough that friends and family often can't pick up on the change. Most patients report that people in their lives just comment on how great they look. In the right candidate, hair restoration can reliably restore a natural and youthful hairline. More importantly, this procedure can have a dramatic impact on a person's self-confidence and self-esteem. We have provided hair transplant before and after photos of our patients to help you visualize the possibilities.
