They say, an apple a day keeps the doctor away, and we say a topical vitamin C serum every day keeps aging at bay!

Using a topical vitamin C serum daily is one of the best ways to encourage natural collagen production as well as fight the visible signs of aging.

We offer two of the best topical Vitamin C serums on the market – Skinbetter’s Alto Defense Serum and SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic and encourage all of our patients to add one of them into their daily skin care regimens.

Using the apple analogy again, an apple will turn brown once it’s cut. But if you squeeze lemon juice on it, the vitamin C in the lemon will keep the apple from looking dull and discolored for quite some time.

Patients often wonder if taking vitamin C orally or simply eating healthy will have the same benefit, and while yes, eating apples is great for your health and for your skin, it does not provide the same benefits of a topical serum.  Apples are rich in vitamins, including vitamin C, but they still turn brown without the squeeze of lemon.

The Benefits of Using A Topical Vitamin C Serum

Some of the known benefits of using a topical vitamin C serum  include:

  • Brighter skin tone
  • Firmer skin
  • Providing the appearance of a porcelain glow
  • Protecting skin cells from sun damage
  • Reducing inflammation

How To Use Vitamin C Serum

One bottle of Skinbetter’s Alto Defense Serum, Jan Marini’s C-Esta Serum or SkinCeutical’s C E Ferulic will last about four months if you use it daily on your face, neck, and décolleté (longer if you only apply it to your face).

The order of any skin care application should be from the thinnest product to the thickest product. Vitamin C serums are usually very thin, so they should be applied soon after washing your face.

  • Use 3 drops on the  face and neck
  • Use 4+ drops if you also include the décolleté

It is rare for someone to have an adverse reactions to topical vitamin C serums, but if you do, please give our Palo Alto or Campbell office a call immeditately – (650) 327-3232. If you have any questions about skin care, feel free to email us for a consultation with Skincare By Colleen.
