Chin Augmentation
Achieving a natural balance to a face is paramount when striving for the ideal rejuvenated appearance. Some features of the face can be too prominent or not prominent enough, as in the case of a recessed chin. The tricky part of rejuvenating one’s chin is that it should not draw attention to your face, but rather bring balance and symmetry to enhance the overall attractiveness of your face.
Our goal with chin, cheek and jaw reshaping options is to create a balanced appearance that can complement the attractive features of your face. In men, a strong jawline is more ideal and expresses masculinity, while in women the chin should be balanced with the jawline appearing softer and more subtle. Chin implants and chin augmentation are necessary in some patients to achieve symmetry and contour. In other patients, chin and cheek reduction can be performed by precisely reducing the size of the bone. At the same time, cheek implants can balance the facial structure adding volume or highlighting the cheekbones. Chin augmentation may also be combined with other procedures such as a neck lift or neck liposuction (double chin surgery) to achieve a crisp jawline and neckline.
During your consultation, we will use digital computerized morphing technology to analyze your face as a whole and determine realistic goals for surgical or non-surgical chin augmentation.
Non-Surgical Chin Augmentation
Non-surgical chin augmentation is done with the placement of dermal fillers such as Radiesse®, Juvederm® or Perlane®. This can be done right in the comfort of the office and allows patients to provide direct feedback. We utilize the innovative microcannula injection method to reduce bruising and swelling. Using these fillers allows us to bring the chin into better proportions with the rest of the face. The results can last up to one year. Pre-Operative Process
Am I a candidate for a chin implant and or cheek/jaw surgery?
Selecting the right candidate for surgery is an important part of every consultation. The overall goal is to create an aesthetic facial balance and bring about natural harmony. Common reasons for seeking out this type of surgery:
- Chin augmentation can complement nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) to bring balance to the face and help to define a patient’s jawline. A small/recessed chin can sometimes make a nose appear larger than it really is.
- Male patients seeking a stronger and more balanced jawline
- Patients seeking a more prominent jawline or cheekbones as weak facial structure of the cheek or chin may detract from other features of the face
- Asymmetry of the jaw
During your consultation, we will work with you to select or customize implants that bring harmony and balance to your face. You will be able to feel and touch the soft implants during your visit.
Technique
How is this surgery performed?
Chin implant and cheek and jaw reshaping surgery can be performed under local anesthesia or general sedation and takes approximately one hour. Most patients go home the same day and return 3-5 days after surgery for suture removal. The incision for chin and jaw surgeries is carefully placed in the natural skin crease under the chin so that it is barely perceptible when healing is complete. Cheek augmentation surgery is performed via small incisions inside the mouth. During your consultation, we will determine if you are a candidate for a chin implant, which is often combined with a rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) and/or neck liposuction (double chin surgery) to help you achieve the most natural and balanced results. We focus exclusively on facial cosmetic surgery and have a combined fifteen years of surgical and advanced fellowship training dedicated to the anatomy of the face and neck.
What should I expect on the day of surgery?
Prior to surgery, you will meet the anesthesia team and likely will be asked to review your allergy and medical history. You’ll be given medication to help you relax. When you wake up your chin will be in a dressing that will be removed 3-5 days after surgery. We work hard with the anesthesiologist to minimize any nausea or pain after surgery. After one to two hours of recovery, you can be discharged from the surgery center with a family member or friend.
Post-Operative Recovery Process
What should I expect after my surgery?
Our philosophy is to see you early and often after surgery. So many questions arise in the first two weeks following any surgery that we believe setting up a series of appointments for that time period alleviates any anxiety a patient may have about the recovery process. We will do a careful exam and more importantly answer any questions you may have. A soft diet is recommended for the first 1-3 days after your procedure. Your sutures will be removed four to five days after surgery. We ask our patients to refrain from any vigorous physical activity for 2-3 weeks after surgery.
Our core objective is to provide a safe, comfortable surgical experience that aspires to restore your appearance and aims to produce natural results. We have provided before and after photos of our patients to help you visualize the possibilities. Request your consultation online or call (650) 407-2922 to schedule an appointment to see us in the Bay Area in our Palo Alto or Los Gatos offices.
