What Is Aesthetic Skin Conditions?

Aesthetic Skin Condition is a branch of dermatology focused on diagnosing, treating, and managing conditions and diseases related to the skin, hair, and nails. This includes conditions such as acne, eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, skin cancer, infections, autoimmune disorders, hair loss, and more. Along with cosmetic dermatology, Aesthetic Skin Conditions addresses issues that affect the health and functionality of the skin. We use a variety of diagnostic tools and treatment modalities, including medications, procedures, and lifestyle interventions, to improve the health and well-being of their patients’ skin.

Many of the procedures we perform include shave & punch removals, TRL laser skin lesion removal, excisions, cautery, kenalog injections, TCA cross, subcision, therapeutic Botox injections for migraines, excessive sweating, rosacea and melasma.

Dermatological conditions we treat

We work with our patients to solve their skin concerns, applying the latest research and most advanced technology. Among the medical skin conditions we treat are:

  • Acne: Acne can be more than just a few pimples. We offer laser treatments, facials, peels, extractions, and customized skin care plans to help you get your acne under control.
  • Acne scarring: Scars can be unwanted reminders of past acne and can be treated with various methods including laser resurfacing, TCA cross, subscision.
  • Angiomas: Red bumps caused by dilated blood vessels on the skin can be cosmetically bothersome. They can be treated with laser or cautery
  • Cysts & Lipomas: Benign lumps on the skin that can be cosmetically or physically bothersome. Treatment includes surgical excision in office.
  • Eczema: Also called atopic dermatitis, eczema causes an itchy rash to develop on the skin. Treatments for eczema include prescription medications
  • Fungal Rashes: Tinea veriscolor or other types of tinea on the face and body can be treated with topical or oral medications which can be prescribed by our provider
  • Lentigo: Also known as sun spots or liver spots are typically caused by sun exposure over time and can be treated with laser treatments or BBL
  • Melasma: Pigmentation caused by hormones, genetics, heat and sun. Customized skin care regimens and laser like Moxi or Halo.
  • Mila: These little bumps can form on various areas of the face and can be treated with in office extractions and customized skincare regimens to prevent recurrence
  • Moles: Cosmetically or physically bothersome moles on the face or body can be removed with minor surgical or laser procedures
  • Rashes (Eczema, Psoriasis or Allergic Contact Dermatitis): Can typically be treated with topical prescription creams and individualized skin care regimens
  • Rosacea: An inflammatory condition that causes facial redness, usually over the nose and cheeks. Facial treatments and lasers can help to relieve the redness.
  • Sebaceous hyperplasia: Develops when a person has an overgrowth in their oil glands. Yellow bumps form on the skin. Treatments include lasers or electrocautery.
  • Seborrheic Keratoses: Benign skin growths that usually appear in people over 30. While they are generally harmless, you may wish to have them lasered or frozen off.
  • Skin Cancer: Full body mole cheeks to screen for skin cancer is the first step in detecting skin cancer. Our dermatologic specialist will examine your skin to screen for potential cancerous lesions.
  • Skin Tags: Develops on the face or body and can be treated by various methods including cryotherapy, snip removal and electrocautery
  • Syringomas: a firm bump that resembles a pimple and usually forms in small clusters, typically on the face around the eyelids. Syringomas are the result of overgrowth of sweat glands. These bumps are harmless but can be treated cosmetically with TRL laser.
  • Telangiectasias: Some blood vessels are located close to the skin’s surface. When these blood vessels break or dilate, they become visible, causing telangiectasias. Left untreated, the condition can become worse, causing more redness over a larger area of the skin. Laser treatments are often effective.
  • Urticaria: More commonly known as hives, urticaria can be triggered by an immune response, medications or an unknown cause. Allergy medications may help to prevent hives, and oral steroids may provide relief.
  • Xanthelasma: benign fatty deposits, typically occurring around the eyelids. These can be treated with TRL laser.

Recovery and Beyond

Pain tolerance varies from person to person, and the level of discomfort will vary by the location and depth of the treatment. On a scale from 0 to 10, (0 being no pain and 10 being unbearable pain), our patients usually report a 3 to 5 level of discomfort. For the NanoLaserPeel , a topical anesthetic will be applied 30 minutes prior to treatment. For the Contour TRL, our doctors may administer a subcutaneous local anesthetic.

NanoLaserPeel™ & Contour TRL® FAQs

4-6 weeks prior:

  • Begin using retinol, or a vitamin A, alpha-hydroxy acid, or hydroquinone cream.

2 weeks prior:

  • Stop using the retinol, vitamin A cream, alpha-hydroxy acid or a hydroquinone cream.
  • Stop using aspirin (if medically possible). Tylenol (acetaminophen) is fine.
  • To avoid bruising, stop taking vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, Ginkgo biloba, evening primrose, garlic, feverfew, and ginseng to avoid bruising. Tylenol (acetaminophen) is fine.

2 days prior:

  • Do not use medications that cause photosensitivity such as doxycycline or minocycline.
  • Stop taking ibuprofen and drinking alcohol.
  • Hydrate as much as possible. The laser is attracted to the water in your cells so your results will be better if you are well hydrated.
  • If you are prone to cold sores, begin an antiviral and continue for 3-5 days after treatment.
  • Get lots of rest with your head and shoulders elevated to help minimize the swelling that may occur around the eyes and cheeks.
  • Apply Aquaphor to the area immediately after treatment but then keep the area dry so the peeling with begin sooner.
  • Avoid activities that can cause flushing for two weeks after treatment.
  • Avoid aggressive facial treatments, such as microdermabrasion and chemical peels, for 4 weeks post treatment and avoid topical products that may cause irritation for 6 weeks following your treatment.
  • Be aware that acne lesions or milia (white-colored tiny keratin plugs) can occur up to a month after treatment.
  • Contact our office if you develop acne or milia or if blistering, crusting, or scabbing develops. We will most likely recommend a thin layer of antibiotic ointment (such as bacitracin) for you to use twice a day until the skin heals. Do not pick or attempt to remove scabs that form following your treatment, as this may cause infection or scarring.

Your skin will probably look like it has been severely sunburned for approximately 3 to 5 days after the NanoLaserPeel and anywhere from 10 days to 4 weeks after a Contour TRL treatment. During this time, your skin may feel raw and have some oozing drainage. Some patients report a tingling, burning, or itching sensation that comes and goes throughout the day.

The top layer of your skin will re-grow and can be covered with makeup in about one week. At this time, you will see noticeable improvements in your skin’s texture, tone and wrinkle appearance*. Deeper laser treatments also stimulate the growth of new collagen over the next 4 to 6 months and oftentimes, the skin may show increasing improvements in tightness and resilience.

Our staff will instruct you on how to care for your skin during the healing process, and you may use ice or pain medication to alleviate any discomfort, but it is critical to stay out of the sun as too much sun could cause permanent, irregular discoloration. You can also refer to this video for step-by-step instructions on how to care for your skin after your laser treatment.

There are minor risks associated with laser skin resurfacing treatments, but negative side effects are very rare, especially in our office where our practitioners are highly trained. Possible side effects can include scarring, infection, abnormal healing, and allergic reactions, all of which our staff will discuss with you prior to your appointment.

Also, we generally recommend that people with darker skin tones do not get a Contour TRL resurfacing treatment because the strength of the laser might cause permanent skin lightening. Better treatments for people with darker tones are the Forever Young BBL™ and Halo Hybrid Laser.
