A facelift consultation should be a two-way conversation. Your surgeon should be asking questions to understand you, your goals and your expectations, but it is also your opportunity to learn more about their experience, approach and whether they feel like the right fit for you.

At L&P Aesthetics, Dr. David M. Lieberman, Dr. Sachin S. Parikh and Dr. Steven A. Curti take pride in thorough consultations that give patients the time and information they need to make an informed decision. Knowing what to ask can help you get even more out of that conversation.

So, What Should I Ask During a Facelift Consultation?

At L&P Aesthetics, our surgeons approach each consultation as an opportunity to understand the patient’s concerns, goals and expectations while helping them feel informed about their options. While every consultation will look a little different, there are a few key topics we believe every patient should feel comfortable discussing with a prospective surgeon.

Use these 15 questions as a guide to help you get the most of your facelift consultation and better understand a surgeon’s experience, approach to safety and aesthetic philosophy.

1. What should I know as I begin considering a facelift?

Starting with an open-ended question gives your surgeon an opportunity to share what they believe is most important to understand about facelift surgery. It can also help guide the rest of the conversation, from what a facelift can realistically accomplish to how they approach planning, recovery and results.

2. What do you look for when evaluating someone for a facelift?

Your surgeon will consider much more than age when recommending a facelift. Facial anatomy, skin quality, tissue laxity, previous procedures and your individual concerns can all shape the treatment plan. Asking what they see in your face can also help you better understand their recommendations.

3. How often do you perform facelifts?

There is no single number that determines expertise, but frequency matters. A surgeon who performs facelift surgery regularly is continually working with variations in facial anatomy, aging patterns and surgical complexity.

4. Which facelift technique do you typically use, and why?

Rather than looking for one “best” answer, listen for the surgeon’s reasoning. They should be able to explain what tissues they reposition, how their technique works and why they believe it is appropriate for your face.

5. How would you customize the procedure for my anatomy?

A facelift should not be a standardized operation. Ask what the surgeon sees in your cheeks, jawline, neck and skin quality and how those features influence their surgical plan.

6. What areas would my facelift address, and what would it not change?

This question can help establish realistic expectations. Facelift surgery may improve the cheeks, jowls, jawline and neck, but concerns involving the eyes, brows, skin texture or volume may require a different procedure or treatment.

7. Can I see facelift results from patients with concerns similar to mine?

Yes, and this can be one of the most useful questions you ask.

Look for patients with a similar age range, facial structure, degree of aging or primary concerns. While no two results will be identical, comparable facelift results may give you a better sense of how the surgeon approaches faces like yours.

8. How do you define a natural-looking facelift result?

“A natural result” can mean different things to different surgeons and patients. Asking this question can help determine whether the surgeon’s aesthetic philosophy aligns with your own.

9. Can I see long-term results, not only early postoperative photos?

Early results can be helpful, but photos taken a year or more after surgery can show how the tissues settle and how scars mature over time.

10. What should I expect on the day of my facelift?

Understanding what happens on surgery day can make the process feel much more approachable. Ask your surgeon to walk you through where the procedure takes place, anesthesia, how long surgery typically takes and what happens before you return home.

11. What complications do you discuss with facelift patients?

Every surgical procedure carries risk. A thoughtful surgeon should be comfortable discussing potential complications rather than minimizing them, including bleeding, infection, healing concerns, nerve-related issues and other risks specific to the procedure being considered.

12. If a complication occurs, how would you manage it?

This is one of the most important questions to ask directly. Ask how the surgeon handles urgent concerns, who you contact after hours and whether complications are managed by the operating surgeon or another member of the team. The goal is not to find a surgeon who claims complications never happen, but one who has a clear plan for recognizing and managing them.

13. What does postoperative care and follow-up look like?

Facelift care continues well beyond the operating room. Ask how often you will be seen after surgery, how the practice monitors healing and what access you will have to the surgical team during recovery.

14. How do you handle revisions if a patient is not satisfied with part of the result?

Revision policies vary between practices. Understanding how a surgeon evaluates and manages concerns after healing can help set expectations before surgery.

15. Why do you recommend this surgical plan for me?

This question brings everything together.

By the end of the consultation, your surgeon should be able to clearly explain what they see, what they recommend and why. You should understand the expected benefits, limitations and alternatives without feeling pressured toward a particular procedure.

What Information Should I Walk Away With?

The best facelift consultation should leave you with a clearer understanding of both the procedure and the surgeon performing it. Credentials and experience matter, but so do communication, complication planning and aesthetic fit.

Pay attention to whether your surgeon listens to the concerns you actually have, explains the anatomy behind their recommendations and is willing to discuss both the possibilities and limitations of surgery.

A consultation should ultimately help you answer a larger question: Do I trust this surgeon’s skill, judgment and aesthetic approach with my face?
